Local Customs
The people of the Dominican Republic are known for their friendliness and affinity for laughter. However, as a whole, they are quite conservative and visitors should take measures to be respectful of their culture. For example, it is proper to exchange some pleasantries at the start of any conversation before getting down to business. The Dominicans make their appearance a top priority. Wearing light, comfortable clothing is appropriate during the day, but at night, especially in the cities, men wear slacks and a nice shirt while women are usually found wearing their evening best. Many historical sites and churches also have strict rules concerning proper attire.
