Higüey
One of the largest cities in the southeast region of the Dominican Republic, it boasts a population of around 150,000 and is a hub for agriculture and transportation in the region. Marvel at La Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, a basilica constructed in honor of the patron saint of all Dominicans, Our Lady of Altagracia, the Virgin Mary. If you visit the basilica, a dress code is enforced so be sure to cover your knees and shoulders. Shop for fresh produce in the Mercado de Higüey, a bustling market overflowing with fruits, vegetables and snack stands. Each year on January 21, devout pilgrims from across the country pay their respects to their patron saint on Día de la Altagracia.
Punta Cana Ecological Park
Explore the abundant examples of plants and wildlife in this natural refuge. A guided tour includes trails meandering among natural and cultivated landscapes. The park features natural freshwater lagoons, a petting farm with domesticated Dominican animals and an iguana habitat. Make time for a horseback riding tour through the park and enjoy a scenic ride along the coast.
Marinarium Marine Park
Book an exciting and educational experience in one excursion. Join a half-day cruise where you will marvel at schools of fish and brightly-hued coral in a glass-bottomed pontoon boat. You will then have the opportunity to get up close by snorkeling with sharks, sting rays and other marine life.
Parque Nacional del Este
Take a Punta Cana excursion to a beautiful national park in the southeastern peninsula covering over 100,000 acres. Discover lush vegetation, 144 species of birds as well as cave drawings created by Taínos, the indigenous people of the Dominican Republic. Part of the national park, Isla Saona, is not to be missed.
